“As a result of an arctic nuclear test, a fictional carnivorous dinosaur known as the Rhedosaurus thaws out of the ice and starts making its way down the east coast of North America. It arrives in new York where it manages to destroy most of Coney Island before finally being killed.”
The thawing out, definitely relates to the Slusho stuff, and obviously the New York stuff. And they were shooting stuff at Coney Island in the last week or 2. Damn, this sounds like a pretty good theory to me. It has more relevance than some of the other ones I’ve heard.
Today we sit down with "Cloverfield" director Matt Reeves to discuss this mystery project.
"We Were The Cool Kids" Sits Down With "Cloverfield" Director Matt Reeves : WWTCK: Thank you for taking the time to sit with us to discuss this mystery project.
MR: Is it really all that much of a mystery?
WWTCK: Well not to us but to those trying to solve "the clues" ... have you seen some of the analysis?
MR: Well you and I both know that Ethan Haas was right. WWTCK: (laughing) Yep ... so what's it been like on the set? ... is there as much excitement there as there is online?
MR: There's been a lot of discussion about the "monster" ... but you know people are really looking in the wrong direction with that.
WWTCK: But I thought it was a monster?
MR: Monster? the keyword there is "monster" ... "monster".
WWTCK: Monster?
MR: "Monster" ... in quotes ... think of what's missing from that and that will be your clue to finding the other site.
WTTCK: There's another site?
MR: One other site ... people really need to learn to follow the eyes.
WWTCK: The eyes?
MR: Look into my eyes. WWTCK: Pardon?
MR: What do you see in my eyes?
WWTCK: Nothing?
MR: You know better than that.
WWTCK: Perhaps another line of questioning ... what was your directorial approach to this project?
MR: JJ was a bit of a taskmaster that we get things very right ... he wanted certain things caught on camera specifically for the trailer ... he mostly directed the trailer footage himself. WWTCK: Really?
MR: Yes.
WWTCK: Can you talk about the effects person that was fired for sharing the set photos?
MR: He was ... (gun to head motions) ... dealt with.
WWTCK: I'm quite sure he's still alive.
MR: Don't make us have to ... deal with you.
WWTCK: Um ... okay ... so back to directorial style-
MR: I once tried jamming a kitten into the kitchen disposal.
WWTCK: Pardon?
MR: Sometimes I get ... sometimes I just ... is it ... well yeah ... my mother never found out what I did.
WWTCK: Okay so you really haven't answered the question.
MR: You didn't ask me one.
WWTCK: About your directorial style?
MR: She thought my brother did it ... ridiculous bitch.
WWTCK: I'm sorry.
MR: Wouldn't you be offended? ... of course she thought my brother did it ... because me ... well I was never good enough at anything ... it couldn't have been me ... no ... my brother got the beating and locked in the closet not me ... he was the one that they kept hidden away for a week while they fed him through a slot in the door ... he always got all the attention.
WWTCK: Should we postpone this?
MR: No! ... okay ... so yeah ... me directing this piece of shit ... Globs From Space piece of shit movie yeah let's just talk about that.
WWTCK: You seem awfully bitter.
MR: I've had a very long day.
WWTCK: Would you like to postpone?
MR: No we're already here. WWTCK: Can we get back to the movie?
MR: Sure.
WWTCK: Can we expect an entirely original creation and not a "remake" of something that we might have seen before?
MR: You've definitely seen this before just not presented in this way ... the Jensen family ... the ones who owned the copyright to this ... story ... really allowed us to be liberal.
WWTCK: The Jensen family?
MR: Yes.
WWTCK: When will we find out more?
MR: It took me 30 minutes to get the entire thing into the drain ... it was ridiculous.
WWTCK: Pardon?
MR: 30 minutes of jamming and meowing and this fucking bastard thing scratching my shit ... you've never heard such a noise ... I'm pretty sure the neighbors heard something of course.
WWTCK: Okay ... let's try something else.
MR: What else is there to try? ... they've yet to construct a disposal that's capable of taking a kitten in the quickest possible way.
WWTCK: Can we not talk about the kitten anymore? MR: You bought it up. WWTCK: Oh ... I think we're done here.
Today we sit down with "Cloverfield" screenwriter Drew Goddard to discuss this mystery project.
"We Were The Cool Kids" Sits Down With "Cloverfield" Writer Drew Goddard : WWTCK: Thank you for taking the time to sit with us to discuss "Cloverfield".
DG: As long as we don't talk about the "gay" rumours it's all good.
WWTCK: "Gay rumours"?
DG: Yeah that me and and JJ are currently riding the hobby horse. WWTCK: What?
DG: Do you honestly believe a straight man would've had anything to do with "Buffy The Vampire Slayer"?
WWTCK: I'm here to talk about "Cloverfield"
DG: Total metaphor for all the pillow biting I've done.
WWTCK: Don't you think that's a little immature?
DG: Nothing immature in having a man inside you ... it hurts like Hell for one ... see what I did there? I said "Hell" ... that'll keep the geeks busy ... make sure you spell that in capital letters and backwards all creepy like.
WTTCK: So you won't tell us what this movie is about?
DG: 126 minutes long.
WWTCK: The movie is 126 minutes long?
DG: Had we left in the underwater stuff it would've been much longer. WWTCK: Underwater?
DG: Would you like a cookie?
WWTCK: No DG: I took up baking after my friend Al gave me this great recipie for endangered Panda ... slides right off the bones.
WWTCK: This isn't really accomplishing anything.
DG: Sorry please ask a question.
WWTCK: Is it true this movie is being shot entirely with video cameras?
DG: Not the stuff in the the flodded tunnel under the city ... it never would've worked ... the moment the monster opens it's mouth? ... it got hotter than a 12 year old Thai boys asshole after an eight hour shift in a sweatshop WWTCK: Um ... monster?
DG: Damn straight Shub-Niggurath.
WWTCK: Alright ... is it true the cast wasn't given a script before signing on?
DG: Can you take out the stuff about the 12 year old Thai boy?
WWTCK: Um ... sure
DG: Thank you ... and yes it's very true ... that won't happen again ... Kinko's was totally unprofessional with us.
WWTCK: Any improvisation in the film?
DG: JJ is not big on that kind of thing ... we had a tight script ... and I do mean ... tight
WWTCK: Tight ... okay ... so what do you think of all the hype?
DG: Hey we've gotta steal ideas for the sequel somewhere you fat son of a bitch
WWTCK: Pardon me?
DG: Have another cookie tubby.
WWTCK: Pardon me?
DG: Look all I'm saying-
WWTCK: We're getting off-track.
DG: There won't be a train in this film.
WWTCK: What?
DG: You heard me the first time fatty.
WWTCK: Excuse me?
DG: I bet if I produced a sandwich right now I could totally get you to do the "Chunk Shuffle"
WWTCK: I'm not fat.
DG: Why are you so obsessed with talking about your weight? ... eating disorder line one! WWTCK: Can we get back to the movie?
DG: Sure.
WWTCK: It's been said that this movie is being referred to internally as "Godzilla" ... comment?
DG: Not Godzilla
WWTCK: But it's a monster?
DG: Yes
WWTCK: When will we find out more?
DG: How much more do you need to know? ... it's a motherfucking monster from the motherfucking sea ... I've always wanted to say that!
WWTCK: So it's a sea monster?
DG: I didn't say that.
WWTCK: Yes you did.
DG: Don't tell me what I said just Mister "You Just Said It" Person ... I know fifteen ways to kill a man.
What do you do when you get an email telling you that JJ Abrams wants to talk to you? You take the chance, and realize that you won't be outdone by the brilliant man who interviewed the "Cloverfield" monster.
"We Were The Cool Kids" Sits Down With "Cloverfield" Producer JJ Abrams : WWTCK: Thank you for taking the time to sit with us to discuss "Cloverfield", and clear up a few things about this great mystery project.
JJ: It's great to be here.
WWTCK: About "Cloverfield" ... there's been a lot of theories-
JJ: I killed a hooker and Paramount covered it up. WWTCK: Pardon me?
JJ: They won't let me go now ... you've gotta help me.
WWTCK: Um-
JJ: I can pay you.
WWTCK: Can't we just talk about this movie?
JJ: Who sent you?
WTTCK: What? Mister Abrams can we just talk about "Cloverfield"?
JJ: Fine ... fine ... but don't you tell me that there isn't a microphone in that ficus.
WWTCK: That's not a ficus.
JJ: I'm on to you ... I created "Alias" ... I know things ... bad things ... dark things. WWTCK: Are you okay Mr. Abrams?
JJ: Until you've Greco-Roman wrestled with a greased up Tom Cruise in a hotel room in Rome you don't know anything.
WWTCK: I really don't ... really? JJ: (whispered) He showed himself to me.
WWTCK: Um. Is it true you're going to be revealing the title of this film at "Comic-Con"?
JJ: I can do that now if you like.
WWTCK: Really?
JJ: Of course. WWTCK: So the title is?
JJ: I just told you.
WWTCK: What?
JJ: (whispered) If you play this interview backwards ... everything is revealed.
WWTCK: Really?
JJ: Paramount wants me back at the studio ... right now.
WWTCK: Oh I didn't know you had an appointment?
JJ: They're watching us.
WWTCK: Who is?
JJ: (whispered) Them.
WWTCK: Paramount?
JJ: Shh! ... don't you know they have powers ... bad powers ... they're run by ... (whispered) Jews.
WWTCK: I didn't know that
JJ: Jews run everything man ... it's all in the trailer of the film.
WWTCK: It is?
JJ: Paramount thinks it's a monster? ... it's (whispered) the Jews.
WWTCK: What?
JJ: They killed ... her.
WWTCK: "Her" who?
JJ: I have a gun.
WWTCK: Excuse me?
JJ: I'm prepared to cyanide myself if anyone learns of the truth.
WWTCK: A gun?
JJ: And cyanide ... if Jennifer Garner has taught us anything by being married to Ben Affleck it's you need to have a couple of different ways to escape. WWTCK: I'm confused.
JJ: If the cyanide doesn't do it a bullet always will.
WWTCK: I'd like to leave now.
JJ: But you've already left.
WWTCK: Why are you always so cryptic?
JJ: I'm not really here.
WWTCK: I think I'd really like to leave.
JJ: Don't let the seahorse hear you think.
WWTCK: The what?
JJ: Now they'll never let the bubbles out of the cage.
WWTCK: Bubbles?
JJ: Who told you about the bubbles?!
WWTCK: You're really scaring me. JJ: Would you like to go for lunch? WWTCK: Um no.
The latest slice of rumor sliding down the pipe is this :
"Cloverfield opens with a crew cleaning up after the shit hits the fan, and somebody stumbles upon a camera. They press play and the playback is how the rest of the film unfolds."
I'm now even more intrigued. This is a completely unconfirmed rumor that is being stated as fact by another site that took the information from an undisclosed source. There's also a problem with this rumor : It's rumored that several cast members were given video cameras. Why would the filmmakers be giving several cast members cameras if they were only going to use footage from one camera? I'm calling shenanigans on this one, but who knows?
Please feel free to comment about this latest piece of info.
Haynes, writing about the Cloverfield viral marketing campaign, instructed her readers to follow four steps to learn more about the campaign. Here’s step #3:
3- Google “bloop”
It’s a campaign that crosses many sites about a physical phenomenon. They even have a fake news story embedded into cnn.com.
I googled “bloop” and found the CNN story about the mysterious “bloop” sound dated June 13th, 2002 — the story doesn’t appear to be fake, as Haynes believed. There was also a story at Australia’s The Age about it, with the same date. I also found an entry at Wikipedia for the phenomenon which mentioned a tie to (drum roll) H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos:
The site of the Bloop is remarkably close to the site of the fictional city of R’lyeh from H. P. Lovecraft’s short story “The Call of Cthulhu”, where an ancient undersea monster (Cthulhu) lies sleeping. Lovecraft said that R’lyeh is located at 47°9′S, 123°43′W in the southern Pacific Ocean, with the bloop also being targeted somewhere in that range.
The Wikipedia entry led me to Bloopwatch.org, which in turn led me to this nifty YouTube video called “Cthulhu Meditation.” The video plays the bloop sound, which sounds very much like the monster’s roar from the 1-18-08 trailer. Listen to the Cthulhu Meditation video from 5:36 to 5:24, then listen the monster’s roar, which interrupts the Wolf Mother song in the trailer. One last thing: I have twice left a comment on Haynes’ blog asking where she encountered the bloop phenomenon in connection to this movie, as her’s was the first reference I have found; both times my comment has been deleted.
To sum up: A mysterious sound believed to be made by a creature larger than the largest-known animal on Earth was discovered by scientists in 1997 in the vicinity of H.P Lovecraft’s R’yleh. The sound matches that made by the monster in the Cloverfield trailer. This is more evidence supporting the Cthulhu angle.
Jerking the blogosphere around like his own personal publicity puppet, the singular J.J. Abrams has bloggers and fanboys waiting with bated, Cheeto-laced breath for his latest in enigmatic show biz buzz. This time it comes in the form of a cryptic teaser trailer first seen before the Transformers movie.
Like so many teasers before it, the trailer doesn’t reveal the film’s title but tantalizes with explosions, Japan-bound bon voyages, and a decapitated Lady Liberty. And for this everyone from Ain’t It Cool News to CNBC is atwitter?
After its premier at Michael Bay’s latest two-hour car commercial, bootleg copies of the trailer were put up on YouTube and taken down by Viacom-owned Paramount. Then the trailer went up on Apple’s site (in HD glory) and an official website, among other not-so-official ones, was “discovered.”
Since then a variety of unconfirmed sources have yielded a few things the blogosphere now seems to accept as fact. The working title of the film is “Cloverfield” and it is a monster flick shot entirely on handheld cameras from the point of a group trying to escape a bestial New York City. Word is that on set the film is referred to as “The Parasite” which seems awfully self-defeating considering Joon-ho Bong’s The Host so recently reinvigorated the monster genre.
Rumors of everything from Voltron to Godzilla to Donkey Kong have been circulating like head lice in kindergarten. But then, down from the mountain, Mr. Abrams himself sent a note to AintItCoolNews.com to confirm and deny various facets of the snowballing marketing campaign.
Regarding the online stuff you posted: yeah, we’re doing some fun stuff on the web. But, obviously, if the movie doesn’t kick some massive ASS, who gives a rat’s about what’s online? So as you can imagine, we’re focusing mostly on THAT. For what it’s worth, the only site of ours that people have even FOUND is the 1-18-08.com site. The others (like the Ethan Haas sites) have nothing to do with us.
So, while hinting that there are more clues to be discovered (like this odd site that might be connected), Abrams says that he’s “focusing mostly” on the movie and, therefore, not the ARG surrounding the it. This could have been, and might still be, a really cool media blitz, but Abrams’ words don’t inspire me to go out and search the series of tubes for mutant monster memos. Surely more clues will drop, but unless this ARG is holistically and interactively tied in with handheld feel of the film I don’t see anything special here.
So here’s my prediction: It’s The Burg, told Blair Witch style, in a Godzilla movie. And I’m sure that’s exactly how Abrams pitched it to Paramount. I watch Entourage, I know these things.
We watch all of the latest trailers so you don't have to Jul 14, 2007 04:30 AM
THE SKINNY: Your guess is as good as ours. But the film appears to be set in New York, looks like it could be shot with a hand-held camera, and seems to involve some kind of gigantic monster that blows things up real good – like the Statue of Liberty. And it's from Lost mastermind J.J. Abrams, who takes the producer's reins here. "Cloverfield," by the way, is just the movie's working title – sadly, Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium was already taken. (Out Jan. 18, 2008)
WHAT'S COOL: That entire tonal shift the teaser takes at the halfway point. At a going-away party at some New York apartment, everyone is speaking into the camera and wishing "Rob" well when, suddenly, there's a ferocious, bestial roar, the earth shakes and the lights go out. The party guests head to the roof to see what's happening, and a massive fireball goes up in the air. Fiery debris rains down on the apartment building and the guests run down to the street, just in time to see the severed head of the Statue of Liberty fly through the air, crash into some cars and skid down the street. What could it be? A giant demonic force? The second coming of Godzilla? An enraged Rosie O'Donnell who's had her sandwich taken away from her?
WHAT GETS SPOILED: That Statue of Liberty scene won't seem quite so fresh when we actually sit down to watch the movie. But if that was the money shot, it was used well. The Internet hordes are abuzz, making it one of the most anticipated movies among the geek legion.
WE SAY: Allow us to don the hyperbolistic journalist's hat here before announcing: THIS MAY BE THE MOST PERFECT TEASER EVER. OF ALL TIME. PERIOD. Seriously, though, it is. The scant information about this project makes it all the more fascinating – although online chatter speculates it may have to do with horror scribe H.P. Lovecraft and his Cthulhu mythos.
I've added labels to the bottom of each post that will allow you to find the rest of the posts on this blog that relate to "Cloverfield". Now you can zoom through exactly what you're looking for without having to go through the process of hunting through the archives.
Semidi has put up the following information regarding the "Slusho" thing in JJ Abrams mystery project. It's interesting reading, but I think the Lovecraft deal is way off base.
from Semidi: More About the Slusho: The Dagon Connection
Commenter “docangst” notes a possible connection to Slusho! and the use of the god Dagon by H.P. Lovecraft, reviving Cloverfield’s Cthulhu angle.
The “History” page at Slusho.jp recounts Ganu’s dream of drinking the secret ingredient and turning into a whale as a result. This is reminiscent of the transformation of the god Dagon’s worshipers (”the Deep Ones”) into fish-like creatures resembling the deity in the Lovecraft story, “The Shadow Over Innsmouth.”
Dagon was a god of agriculture later drawn into a fish-god tradition by early maritime worshipers according to Wikipedia. The family name “Yoshida,” as previously noted, means “lucky/joyful rice field” and is also a reference to agriculture. The discovery by Ganu Yoshida of Slusho’s! secret ingredient “on the deep ocean floor, under amazing pressure and in the most extreme cold” also dovetails with Dagon and the Deep Ones.
Everyone at IMDB.com thinks they know what this film is going to be about, but they are wrong They have no clue what they are in for. Finally I've found a trailer on YouTube that doesn't require you to squint and/or become seasick :
Trailer For "Cloverfield" aka "1.18.08"
So what is this? Some suggestions I've heard are : o Ghostbusters o Cthulhu o Transformers 2 (have people been drinking?) o Voltron o Godzilla
These are all wrong of course, but then what does that leave us with? Something entirely original perhaps? KQE14 perhaps? Is it possible for someone to create something that we've never seen before? I don't know what this is, but I'm enjoying all the (some just fucking plain stupid) theories.
